Eleven Rift Valley students were selected this summer for intense tutoring and preparation for TOEFL and SAT exams with the Education and Social Empowerment Program in Nandi Hills, Kenya. Tutor Paige Kouba, a Harvard student from Eugene, OR, directed a seven-week summer session with help from EaSEP alums Johnstone Kipyator (headed to Stanford) and Mercy Kiprotich (Cornell).
The East African Scholars Fund helped pay the cost of Paige's airfare and gathered used SAT study guides for students. The 2013 EaSEP group includes four scholars who were among the top 75 scorers on their national high school leaving exam, taken by some 450,000 Kenyan students.
